Steam punk and science fiction

One thing that I think we've lost in the science fiction realm is the old science fiction of the late 19th to mid 20th century and the scientific assumptions that people had at the time  .

 For example, there was a view that the further out from the sun you were the older any civilisation would be :  Venus blanketed in cloud would be  a young world of ocean and swamp, inhabited by monster like dinosaurs, the seas like soda pop , sizzling because of carbon dioxide. 

Mars by contrast was thought to be home to an ageing advanced civilisation , being much further from the sun, that has suffered from an environmental catastrophe (hence Lowell and his canals and indeed the Martians of HG Wells war of the worlds) .  

Then there is Edgar Rice Burroughs "barsoom" series featuring John Carter "gentleman of Virginia" who ends up on Mars and through swashbuckling adventure falls in love with a native Martian Princess, albeit a fifteen foot tall one as Burroughs incorporated lower Martian gravity into the stories.

While we have steam punk today, it makes you wonder what the world circa 1900 would have been like if we had actually got to Venus or Mars and they were inhabited or habitable?

After the BBC decided, because they are xenophobic, racist, colonialist and  imperialist,   to abolish patriotic songs at the last night of the proms , we thought we'd give one a bit of a blast :

The left absolutely hate Britain and like to portray it as a ghastly  fascist- racist hell hole, which is absolute rubbish!  Even though refugees from Europe are fleeing France to get here, *despite *  brexit and covid.

The tribal hypocrisy goes on

Last week I noted that the left like tribalism as much as the right , regardless of what a politician does even if they are counter to left wing ideology

As if to confirm this  the guardian , the UK's esteemed left centre liberal broadsheet  has produced commentary that praised the Prime Minister of New Zealand for delaying that country's elections as "magnanimous and conciliatory". Yet when there was talk of Trump suggesting this for America it was condemned as "what autocrats do".

So this hypocrisy has nothing to do with the Prime Minister of New Zealand belonging to a left wing Labour party and Trump being from a right wing party? It's also worth pointing out that the new Zealand government is a coalition and their Labour party is sharing power with a party called "New Zealand first" which is, erm, a populist nationalist party... aka brexit party ,Boris Johnson and Trump have previously been dismissed as " vulgar populists"   by the left ... but it's okay as NZ first are propping up a left wing government... 

actually I wonder what would happen if , in another reality the Brexit party was propping up a minority Labour government led by a black female feminist leader.... now would that not burst a few bubbles?

In any case elections were suspended in Wales Scotland and London this year.

Where is the guardian outrage in the SNP , Labour in Wales or Labour and mayor Khan  in London getting an extra year?

Hi All,

A glimmer of hope as we approach Shabbat this Friday. Israel and the United Arab Emirates have agreed to form full diplomatic relations, i.e. a peace accord, the third Arab country to do so after Egypt and Jordan. It is a step in the right direction. Not that this will stop the anti-Semites and other Israel haters, who are usually on the far left and anti-war side of any argument, from hating any kind of Israeli success or initiative for peace. After all we have to 'stop the war', unless it is against Israel. Funny that isn't it?

It all began six months ago

Hi All,

I couldn't recall how long I'd been out, but it must have been some time. My bedroom had been tidied and the ensuite bathroom was spotless. I did my usual routine of the 3 's'  (shit, shave, shower),  brushed my teeth, got changed into some causal jeans an a polo neck shirt and headed downstairs, wondering if that mysterious woman 'my boss' was around. Before I did so I put on my e-ring on my right index finger, I felt a sudden swell of the internet web shroud my thought, but I put it into standby mode. 

I could smell coffee! Not that cheap printed coffee, but real coffee that has to be made like they used to a century ago, nowadays real organic coffee beans are worth a year's salary. And there was something else , a distinct smell of cigar smoke, Havana's no less. 

My boss used to drink real coffee and smoke cigars ! But then my boss had been a bloke and in his mid fifties. Even if he wasn't dead already, with his conservative opinions he'd never would have had a sex change. Besides which even today you can change your sex, but not your age. 

I'd practically fallen down the stairs in my rush to get down to the kitchen, where the smells were coming from, and sure enough there she was sitting at my table:  a tall, voluptuous, toned, olive skinned woman with raven hair tied up in a pony tail. Any hetrosexual man's dream. But my boss had been a grumpy old dinosaur, short, fat , five foot, little man complex who drank coffee, smoked Havana cigars and - 

Brandy on the rocks , which Jeeves the holographic  e-butler , dressed like a something out of that old tv show Downton Abbey, was busily pouring out of a decanter into two appropriate brandy glasses. One filled with ice and one not. The not one filled with ice was for me. I remembered this was how we- that is me and my boss- used to have either pep talks or bollockings.  Brandy, Coffee and Tobacco.I wasn't sure which one this would be, afterall I had been found out on my - not so legal use of extra credit and had been given a new heart and liver. 

'Hey Jeeves' I said. Jeeves blanked me, muttering to himself and disappeared, I couldn't recall if he was always like that. The woman, who had been reading a physical newspaper- another trait of my boss- gestured for me to sit down. 

'So who the hell are you?'

'I've already told you'

'My boss was an old  bloke - Ian Hudson Frontenac - head of our banks security division and I was his assistant, until he died in Columbia 4 months ago, after which I got the sack and '

'Fell on hard times it seems, but that's all in past now. You are reinstated as my assistant with full back pay, a rise  and an extended credit line . You can check your e- accounts. There should be a new contact - £1,400 a year, plus a 300% bonus for reaching targets. There should also be £2,500 in there with a further credit line of £2,500 if you so wish to draw on it '. 

I did and the contract was there . And there was a  small fortune in my account . All my other debts had been paid off and I was up to date with my bills, the mortgage and other credit was now with my employer, with only 1% interest and minimum payment. My e-lawyer scanned the contract and said it was ok, so I e-signed it.  A flood of relief came over me that I was now fiscally solvent, I gulped down the coffee and burned my throat in the process, until the e-doctor began to flood my body with god knows what drug to repair the damage. The contract also noted that my line manager was Helen Seville Frontenac de Castro, so she's the new boss and not the old one...

'So, I grinned, you are my new boss' .

'I'm your old and new boss, well okay will this jog a memory. She looked me in the eye and they glowed temporality. 

'Yes Ian was like that , he was Albion Onconvar - a race of humans who blend with an alien species called  Onconvar, who in their native form look like Crawfish,  but each lifeform retains their own memories and have their own distinct personality, in effect two people sharing the same body. So you're also one of them'.

'Not exactly. Think. My name'. The voice had changed. Not Spanish , but some kind of deep baratone.

'Exactly.  '. 

'So the human host as it were died, but the Onconvar part of you survived?' 

'Yes'.

'What happened? '

'It's a long story'

She gulped the rest of her coffee down and drank the brandy in a single shot. 

Jeeves materialised and poured some more brandy. Taking a box out of her satchel, opening it and asked 'cigarette?'

'I'm listening'  as I puffed away on my cigarette. The nicotine surging through me like some kind of hurricane as she puffed on he own cigar. 

'It all began 6 months ago...' 

A heart a liver and a mysterious women at Watford Gap

He woke with a gasp and wondered why Jeeves hadn't woken him up 'Jeeves!' he shouted. No reply . For that matter as he struggled to get out of bed, without success in fact in couldn't seem to get his head of the pillow, he noticed that the lights were off, in fact nothing seemed to work. 

'What an absolute tip' came a foreign -Spanish maybe?- female voice from across the room .

What? Who? Where ? Did I? What the hell did I drink last night? he thought. 

'Your boss, Helen Seville de Castro, we're at your home in the Watford Gap Estate. No you didn't. From the cutter here it looks like three bottles of wine, 2 bottles of even cheaper Vodka and 1 bottle of rum'. 

Ah yes he remembered. The Watford Gap Estate was a sprawling suburbia of modern day housing and flats, built on the old Watford Gap Service station and M1. Following in the footsteps of the second industrial revolution, the 4th transport revolution meant that there was no longer any need for motor vehicles, trains or planes. Thus  no need for a motor way or train network, instead they'd been sold off to various interested parties and most of the old motorway & train network had been rebuilt as 'cheap, affordable, modern housing', much to the disgust of the extremist ecology groups and old fashioned socialists who always needed some global crisis as an excuse to overthrow the existing global democratic capitalist order. Instead of roads, planes and ships,  people and industrial goods were transported around by Astra Portas, an evolution of the Einstein- Rosen bridge or wormholes.  You could live anywhere and work anywhere, sip around the UK, the world, the solar system and wider galaxy within seconds and minutes. How did I recall all that when I can't even remember my- 

 

'John Cumberland, you once said to me that you could drink me under the table and it seems you were utterly wrong about that' the female voice interrupted my thoughts. 'And don't try to move because you are in a suspended force field'

 'Oh it's nothing to worry about, it is in fact the only thing keeping you alive at present, given that your liver and heart are more or less kaput as the expression goes'.

'That's not the only thing shut down as you are maxed over on all your credit lines and thus payments for the bills have all been declined... I hope your recent trip to Venus was worth it all' .

Venus. Ah. Memories came back of someone's stag do, not mine unfortunately. 

'In any case -and don't say I don't look after you- I've just got the go-ahead for us, your benevolent employer to give you a credit line from us, but no more taking out credit from elsewhere. We've put a big note on your credit file to that effect, so you won't be able to borrow from elsewhere anyway'. 

Great, thinking of money at a time like this. 

'We are employed by a banking company, money is everything' .

I'd forgotten that. 

'Then there is the minor detail of your body, but don't worry about that as I'm about to give you a new liver and heart'. 

You a doctor?

'I was once'

That's reassuring. Doctor to banker: but there was something else that was bugging me and I couldn't remember. Something about my boss. 

The lights come on. And peering over me is the hologram of Jeeves , my e-butler, who if I didn't know was looking at me in disapproving manner. I could see another figure coming into view. The boss, apparently, mid twenties and looks wise extremely attractive, 'right she said', getting two vacuum packed bags out of a satchel, 'one liver and one heart'. It was then, just as I passed out at the sight of a heart beating in the bag, that I had a flash of memory :  my boss was a lot older than twenty something and that my boss was male and he died 4 months ago...

Thoughts on Biden's VP pick

Well let's get the bunting out and celebrate that the Democrats in America have nominated a 'woman of colour' to be their Vice Presidential candidate. Clearly this isn't just an act of woke (there now has to be a female and or BAME person on the ticket), but also a clever bit of politics. Joe Biden if he wins in November would be even older than Trump at 78. The Presidency is a demanding job and he'd be seeking re-election at the age of 82. My thought is that the plan is that if he wins he will maybe do a year, retire and let Harris take over mid term,  giving her and the democrats an inbuilt incumbency advantage for 2024: Harris is centre -right :  not like  odious far left 'squad' in the House ( actually they'd be at home in Corbyn's Labour, but Corbynites would probably see them as centralists)  . Plus the American people will get their first woman of colour and first woman as President without having the tedium of actually being elected as a President first, making America more into a Parliamentary form of government. 

The other thing to note is that the Guardian and other left wing papers are fawning over this choice, the only actual reason is colour and gender. Except that if these papers looked a little deeper they would note that Harris is actually a lot more right wing than them. In actual fact I'd say that on balance Harris is as right wing, maybe more so, than our own person of colour and female Home Secretary Pritti Patel.Harris had a similar job in California where she was decidedly unliberal in regards to justice and prison sentences . Yet the Guardian and the left generally  absolutely detests Pritti Patel and in my view has often used racial slurs against her ;allowing a cartoon portraying her as a cow with a ring around it - she's a Hindu in whose religion cows are sacred animals, but and of course calling a woman a 'cow' is offensive on its own terms. Or put another way if 'the other side' had done this about one of their own liberal types there would be hell to pay.  

That neatly sums thing up because, of course, the left et al, aren't really interested in the career development of women or gays or persons of colour . They are more interested in being tribal. Note not ideology , because as noted Harris is more right wing than your average liberal or labour politician in the UK and is closer to the British Conservative party. However because her label is Democrat and not GOP or not Conservative she will get a free pass over her past actions as being centre right  and be adorned NOT by the record and NOT by party philosophy (right or left) but because she has a certain skin tone, certain genitalia and belongs to a certain tribe , in a certain political party. 

That's a very low bar and frankly it's insulting to her and to women and all the other things that some one makes an achievement just because of a characteristic and not their character, beliefs, record or action. 

Liquidum : the Interstellar currency

Liquidum is the interstellar 'hard currency' operating in a similar fashion to the gold standard on earth between 1870 and 1914. Liquidum cannot be replicated and is rare (to be specific the location and mining of it makes it rare, relatively speaking at a universe level), sometimes found on asteroids and planetary bodies, but mostly in nebula and other super nova remains (pulsars, neutron stars) . It is as the name suggests a liquid similar to water, the only problem it is toxic and radioactive to many species, so it is encased in gold (as a radiation shield).  Almost all currencies are tied to specific amounts of this liquid although, both there are both digital (the equivalent of bank notes which must be converted in the physical stuff on demand) and actual physical currency floating around. The most common formula is the Byzantine standard of £ :

1 Libra (£) contains 1 pint of liquidum and is encased in what looks like a golden house brick (hence the knickname 'brick') .

1 Barr contains 1 Fluid ounce of liquidum and is encased in what looks like gold bars or ingots  (nickname bar without the extra b) .

1 Piastre contains 1 fluid scruple of liquidum and is encased in a gold coin. 

There are other subdivsions and coins, but these are the main ones. Thus there are 480 Piastre to a Libra. There are 20 Barrs to a Libra and 24 Piastre to a Barr.

Humans have linked their currencies to this Liquidum, but all major currencies had to undertake a significant revaluation in an attempt to match parity with the Libra. Thus in 21st century terms :

1 new USD was worth 24,000,000  old ones

1 Mark was worth 50,000,000 old Euros 

1 new Pound Stirling (which also ditched decimal) was worth £15,000,000 old ones. 

Thus the entire economy of the US was 800,000 Bricks, Europe 1,300,000 Bricks and the UK 160,000 Bricks.

One world governments in science fiction ?

Hi All, 

Science fiction has often trailed science fact , whether we like it or not, but one thing that has not yet materialised is one world government. Yes I know that space travel and warp drives aren't around either, but the first is actually possible (no the earth is not a disc, but a sphere) and the second is in theory possible, it's on the to do list if humanity can survive humanity...

But one world government, to my mind, seems more outlandish than either a warp drive being invented in someone's shed . Or  for that matter aliens landing in Jerusalem to have a cup of tea with the Chief Rabbis .(Okay I shall be ecumenical) . A one world government seems to me to be more outlandish than aliens landing in Jerusalem to have a cup of tea with the Chief Rabbis, then heading off to Constantinople  for lunch with the Orthodox Patriarch, going over to the Vatican to see the Pope for afternoon tea and finally landing in Canterbury to have supper with the Archbishop and then going to Mecca for a swift half before closing time, before an all night pissup with Buddhist monks and Hindu Vedics. 

However , for the purposes of this blog post I shall muse as to what a world government would look like and it is easy. The UN would not be the role model, in fact if you ever wanted to get a whiff of what a one world government would look like it is the EU, in fact replace European with Earth and you already have an excellent name for a human government. A world government would not be either a military or imperial dictatorship or a liberal democracy on American, Westminster or the European systems. It would be like the EU- a government in effect led by bureaucrats- but like Imperial Germany in the nineteenth century,  it would have a 'fig leave of democracy' with a Parliament that had minimal powers. It would have 'state' governments, 'frugal fours' etc,  wealing and dealing in late night summits, looking after their corner. But after any agreement was signed the implementation, interpretation and supervision would all be in the hands of the bureaucrats and not elected officials.  Big mega corporations would love this set up, but small businesses and venture capitalists would loath the red tape and form filling required to get anything done. I would suspect that there would be a bare bones military more of a heavily armed Federal police force and if mankind had colonised star systems then it would be the larger mega corporations that would do the colonising and therefore  have private forces of their own, in a same way the various European 'east India' companies fielded their own warships and armies. 

Having written this , I don't think it is possible. There are many reasons for this and you could write a book on it. But I suspect that even if aliens did come to Earth, each nation would be vying for whatever they could get or trade, rather than this creating a new world government. After the initial shock, aliens would be old news on social media. 

Bringing science fiction of old into the modern world : how it *must* become woke !

White Klingons, Black Romulans and BAME Time Lords? 

Science fiction from a woke perspective : 

One trope of older  science fiction (as least on tv) is that the humans on the show are always an ethnically (the religious aspect is downplayed) diverse group of characters, although they don't really have any LGBTQ or Muslim characters.  

 Yet any aliens (almost always human looking with some ridges on the nose, face or neck or pointed ears) are always uniform in more ways than one. 

In Star Trek Klingons are almost all uniformly brown- more noticeable in the original series as the makeup department couldn't do to them what they could in the films and the many spin off series, and are all uniformly 'warriors', so any intersectionality analysis can see the racist sub text here - and they call Star Trek "progressive"??!. The Romulans by contrast are always shown as white with pointed ears, even though they are an offshoot of Vulcans and we know there's been black skinned Vulcans on the show, but at least it is the whites who are the baddies now. In Doctor Who we used to have Time Lords: all apparently white -British, all  robed Cardinals come Oxbridge Dons, until the recent retcon. In Babylon 5, the Minbari and Centauri are  aristocratic white with either British or Eastern European accents , but the Narns are all orange with spots. All of these aliens mentioned are also uniform in culture, religion or politics. There is no mention of gay Romulans or transgender Narns, lesbian Klingons or bisexual Borg.

On the feminist front things are even worse. Yes there was Susan from Babylon 5, but today rather than being a Russian Orthodox Jewish, repressed and keeping it a secret telepath, bisexual and in the military, she would have to be a Pakistani Muslim, transgender, bisexual, full on powerful telepath with no flaws or kick ass coolness of the original and in anything but the military. Then there was Delen from the same tv show. While being an alien Minbari, she then changed to become half human looking (a parallel with transgender rights) but then she ends up falling in love with the main hero (a human white hetrosexual, military hero,  cis gendered man!) Captain Sheriden and instead of being an all powerful feminist role model, doing things without powerful men or a situation where men are utter idiots,  she and the aforementioned Captain become a leadership team and have to work together to stop the bad guys, the shadows (who are all - like all shadows are- black in colour, so maybe that show needs to be banned).

Thankfully Dr Who saw the light and decided to support transgender rights by making the lead character a female, albeit a white female who isn't either lesbian or bisexual. At least it is now canon of the show that the Doctor was originally a black female, which upset the patriarchy. 

You can see how popular such an approach is by the viewing figures and that alone means that we should have more woke, progressive science fiction. Science fiction has always been progressive. There's no room for anyone remotely centralist, conservative or general readership. It must be according to the woke agenda. Anyone who disagrees is a phobe of some description,

Alternate Time

Hi All, 

There are many different realities and alternatives in time and in the next couple of days I hope to do an anthology of various short stories set in an alternative reality.  Like any good world building exercise, here is a time line of the past couple of years in this alternative reality : 

 

2016

July -August : UK holds Brexit referendum , votes 51 to 49% to leave EU . Cameron David (Con) , the UK’s second Jewish Prime Minister resigns. In Parliamentary shenanigans, backed by Speaker BurCow, a coalition of remain Conservative, Blairite Labour, Liberal Democrats, Greens , Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish nationalists, plus rebels from the new ‘changed UK’ party takes power under Prime Minister Yvonne June.  She invokes Jesus on the doors on Ten Downing Street, saying that the British people should be forgiven ‘for they no not what they have voted for’ .To placate the outrage, she agrees to hold a further, confirmatory referendum at a later date. Upon hearing the news European President Jean Luc Ricardo also quotes Jesus ‘There is much rejoicing in Europe over one sinner who repents’ . Germany suggests that Brits might be allowed to be the first to get to sun loungers whilst on holiday.

November : Richard ‘Dick Chuck’ Henry III (GOP) wins the US Presidency against the Democrat ticket of Clinton-Trump, calling Trump in particular ‘too left wing’ , Chuck promises to ‘make America great again and forever’ .

December : Russia annexes Belarus, Ukraine and the Baltic States, challenging the lame duck administration of American President Ibrahim Hussein. As the Baltic states are part of NATO America , UK , France etc are compelled to invoke article 5 and declare war on Russia.

2017

January : After a month of fierce fighting NATO manages to liberate the Baltic states, but at great cost ( 34,000 soldiers and countless civilians) . Russia, under its ‘de-escalation’ doctrine launces a nuclear attack on NATO, specifically Birmingham, England, the greatest ever catastrophe Britain has ever faced – 500,000 dead, 2,500,000 horrific injuries and many millions more homeless. President Ibrahim Hussein tells Prime Minster June that she should not retaliate with Trident and says America can stop the missiles, despite an apparent ‘independent’ nuclear deterrent. The war ends with the collapse of NATO ,the British government and Russia holding onto Ukraine and Belarus: Russia subsequently annexes all previous states that used to be part of the Soviet Union and the Russian Empire in Asia.

February : In the first 100 days of the new Chuck Administration , US corporate taxes are abolished. In the next 3 years,  thanks to supreme court nominations ,abortion is outlawed, all gun laws are repealed (allowing citizens to own rocket propelled grenades is confirmed as a constitutional right)  gay marriage is repealed. Congress agrees as a bi -partisan compromise to build a wall on the Mexico and Canadian borders.  US  withdraws from NATO, NAFTA and the middle east, including the ending of any aid to Israel  or the UK saying ‘ fuck the Joos and the Limeys’ . The foreign policy  focus is on war with North Korea,  China and a trade war with Europe. North Korea continues to detonate nuclear weapons.

May : British general election and second referendum on remaining in Europe.  The referendum result is now an 80% vote to leave and the election results in a 200 seat majority for the newly formed ‘British Commonwealth party’, led by former Conservatives, UKIPERS. Their leader is Nathan Flambeau, who becomes the new Prime Minister.  The Guardian newspaper laments that Britain has ‘fallen to a second dark age akin to the fall of Rome’.  The result isn’t surprising given the perilous state of Britain.  The SNP insist the result shows that Scotland should remain within the EU and have an indyref II.

August : President Chuck, confirms 'America first and only' policy and says remaining US forces will leave overseas military bases over time, including Japan and South Korea. Rescinds every single military alliance that America has with other powers.

September : President Chuck offers to buy Greenland from Denmark and in a Twitter rant suggests that the US is interested in Canada joining the USA. 

December :  Secret Israeli-UK- Korean- Japanese - New Zealand- Australian- Canadian talks held in the Negev.

2018

January : The middle east is in perpetual turmoil , with wars waging from Tunisia to Afghanistan and a  complex web of intrigues, state and non state actors and general bloody slaughter.  In the Mediterranean Turkey and Greece are constantly clashing over various islands and oil rights.

February : The British Israeli Korean , Japanese ,Canadian Australian New Zealand (BRITYKOJCANZ) scientific  and defence institute is formed, research is classified. 

March  : Britain formally leaves the EU.

April : European summit : reconstruction of the EU into the Eurozone as a full federal state.  Greece, Hungary and Cyprus walk out. Republic of Ireland mulls reunification with Great Britain. 

2019 

May :  Britain moves a 10 KM  near earth object (an asteroid )  into geo-stationary orbit, begins mining for its resources . SNP say ‘it’s Scotland’s Asteroid’ and say this is another example of why Scotland should join the EU and be independent of the UK.

June : China invades Taiwan .

July : North Korean sabre rattling and further missile tests.

October : BRITYKOJCANZ institute announces a workable food copier or replicator and that it will help to end mass starvation and famine across the world.  Eurozone , Brazil, China, Russia and US ban imports of this food and research into it. Israel suggests to her Arab neighbours that peace in the middle east could be made not with 'land for peace', but 'food for peace' .

November : Brief Turkish-Greek war, ended by Russian intervention on behalf of Greece, who vows to protect 'the Orthodox faithful' across the world. Turkey aligns with China as a result. With America in full isolation and with the Eurozone nothing other than a French led talking shed,  the new global cold war is between Russia and China power blocs. 

December : BRITYKOJCANZ institute (in secret) form a stable Einstein -Rosen bridge (wormhole) from London to the Negev Desert.
